Southern Italy is a land of contrasts: bustling cities, ancient ruins, charming coastal towns, and breath-taking cliffs. During my 4-day trip, I explored Naples, Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius, Sorrento, and Amalfi, experiencing the region’s history, cuisine, and stunning landscapes. Here’s a complete guide for anyone wanting to see the highlights in just a few days.

Day 1: Naples – The Heart of Southern Italy

Arriving in Naples, I was immediately immersed in its vibrant chaos. The city is alive with narrow streets, historic architecture, and the irresistible aroma of freshly baked pizza.

Highlights:

  • Historic Center: Wander down Spaccanapoli, the famous narrow street that cuts through the heart of Naples. You’ll find churches, artisan shops, and street performers at every turn.

  • Piazza del Plebiscito: This grand square is perfect for photos and people-watching.

  • Food: Naples is the birthplace of pizza. I couldn’t leave without tasting an authentic Neapolitan Margherita—simple, fresh, and unforgettable.

  • Views: Walk up to Vomero for panoramic views of the city and bay.

Naples is bustling, noisy, and full of character. One day is just enough to taste the city’s energy and history before heading to the surrounding wonders.

Day 2: Pompeii & Mount Vesuvius

Day two was a deep dive into history and natural beauty.

Pompeii:
The ancient city of Pompeii is frozen in time after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Walking through the ruins, I felt transported back to Roman life, seeing villas, frescoes, and amphitheatres preserved remarkably well. A guided tour helps make sense of the history and highlights the city’s most fascinating sites.

Mount Vesuvius:
In the afternoon, I hiked up Mount Vesuvius, the volcano that shaped the region’s history. The trail is steep but manageable, and the view from the crater overlooking the Bay of Naples is breath-taking. Standing there, you can almost imagine the eruption that changed history forever.

Tip: Wear comfortable shoes and bring water—the hike is worth it for the views!

Day 3: Sorrento – Charming Coastal Town

Next, I headed to Sorrento, a picturesque town perched above the Bay of Naples.

Highlights:

  • Historic Centre: Quaint streets, artisan shops, and cosy cafés. I wandered through small squares and enjoyed a fresh espresso while people-watching.

  • Limoncello: Sorrento is famous for its lemons. Don’t miss tasting homemade limoncello—a sweet, zesty reminder of the region.

  • Views: The terraces overlooking the bay are spectacular, especially as the sun sets.

Sorrento is the perfect balance of relaxation and exploration, offering a slower pace after the intensity of Naples and Pompeii.

Day 4: Amalfi – Coastal Beauty and a Boat Trip

The final day was devoted to the Amalfi Coast, one of Italy’s most scenic destinations.

Amalfi Town:
We explored Amalfi, wandering its narrow streets lined with boutiques and cafés. The Amalfi Cathedral is a highlight, with its stunning architecture and colorful details.

Boat Trip:
No visit to the Amalfi Coast is complete without seeing it from the water. Taking a boat trip along the cliffs offered breathtaking views of Positano, hidden beaches, and the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea. The perspective from the water is truly magical, and it’s a great way to end the trip.

Tip: Bring sunscreen, a hat, and your camera—you’ll want to capture every cliffside view.

Practical Travel Tips for Southern Italy

  • Getting Around: Renting a car is convenient for the Amalfi Coast, but Naples and Pompeii are easy to explore by train and local transport.

  • Best Time to Visit: Spring and early fall are ideal for fewer crowds and pleasant weather. Summer can be hot and busy.

  • Packing: Comfortable shoes for walking and hiking, lightweight layers for coastal breezes, and a swimsuit if you plan to swim along the Amalfi Coast.

Food & Accommodation Tips

  • Must-Try Dishes: Pizza in Naples, seafood along the coast, and fresh pasta with local ingredients.

  • Accommodation: One-night stays in each town make it possible to see a lot without feeling rushed. Boutique hotels or guesthouses give the best local experience.
