Christmas in London: A Complete Guide to the Most Magical Time of Year
London is magical all year round, but there’s something truly special about visiting during Christmas. From sparkling lights on Oxford Street to festive markets, cosy pubs, and ice-skating rinks, Christmas in London feels like stepping into a winter fairy-tale.
I’ve been lucky to experience Christmas in London more than once, and every time, it leaves me in awe. The city completely transforms from mid-November to early January, and whether you’re here for shopping, sightseeing, or just soaking up the atmosphere, you’ll find plenty to keep you enchanted.
In this post, I’ll share the best things to do in London at Christmas, including personal tips, can’t-miss spots, and a few hidden gems.
Christmas Lights and Decorations
London is famous for its Christmas light displays, and trust me — they are worth braving the cold for. Every major street has its own theme, and strolling under the sparkling lights is one of the best free things to do during the holidays.
Oxford Street – The most iconic lights in London. In recent years, they’ve used thousands of twinkling stars and light curtains that stretch across the street.
Regent Street – Look up to see the giant illuminated angels, which are breath-taking at night.
Carnaby Street – Always quirky and creative, Carnaby’s lights are usually themed, from tropical Christmas to sustainability messages. It’s one of my favourite places because it’s so different from the traditional displays.
Covent Garden – Giant baubles, a towering Christmas tree, and twinkling arches make Covent Garden one of the most romantic Christmas spots. Street performers and festive stalls add to the charm.
💡 Personal Tip: Go just after sunset when the lights are first switched on. It’s less crowded than later in the evening, and you’ll still get beautiful photos.
Christmas Markets
No Christmas in London is complete without visiting at least one festive market.
Winter Wonderland (Hyde Park) – This is the biggest and most famous Christmas attraction in London. It’s a mix of market stalls, carnival rides, live shows, and endless food stalls. It can get very busy, so book your tickets in advance. My favourite part is sipping mulled wine while watching people on the rollercoasters (not a ride person myself!).
Southbank Centre Winter Market – Right along the Thames, this market has chalet-style stalls selling gifts, food, and hot drinks. At night, with the city skyline glowing in the background, it feels extra magical.
Greenwich Christmas Market – A smaller, more local option with handmade crafts, gifts, and street food. Perfect if you want to avoid the crowds.
Leicester Square Christmas Market – Compact but very central, and great if you’re already exploring Soho or Covent Garden.
Ice Skating Rinks
London has several seasonal ice rinks that pop up at Christmas, and even if you’re not the best skater (like me!), they’re worth a visit for the atmosphere.
Somerset House Ice Rink – The most iconic, with a huge Christmas tree and neoclassical architecture surrounding the rink.
Natural History Museum (until 2021, now closed) – This used to be my favourite. Since it closed, Skate at Battersea Power Station has become a top choice.
Tower of London Ice Rink – Imagine skating with the Tower of London as your backdrop — unforgettable.
Canary Wharf Ice Rink – A little further out, but it’s one of the largest and has a cool modern vibe.
Christmas Shopping
If you’re visiting London in December, you’ll definitely want to do some Christmas shopping — or at least some window shopping.
Harrods – The ultimate luxury shopping experience. Even if you don’t buy anything, the Christmas windows and decorations inside are spectacular.
Selfridges – Another department store famous for its festive displays.
Liberty London – A Tudor-style building filled with unique gifts and decorations. Their Christmas shop is magical.
Fortnum & Mason – Famous for its hampers and luxury food gifts. It feels like stepping into an old-fashioned Christmas story.
Covent Garden & Carnaby Street – Perfect for more independent, quirky shops.
💡 Personal Tip: If you’re on a budget, skip the shopping and just enjoy the festive atmosphere. Window displays in London are like works of art during Christmas.
Festive Food and Drinks
London is a foodie paradise, and at Christmas, it gets even better.
Traditional Christmas Dinner – Many pubs and restaurants serve turkey with all the trimmings, mince pies, and Christmas pudding.
Street Food – At the markets, you’ll find everything from German bratwurst to raclette cheese and roasted chestnuts.
Hot Drinks – Mulled wine, hot chocolate with cream, or spiced cider are everywhere. Perfect for warming up after a chilly evening stroll.
Afternoon Tea – Many hotels offer a festive version with gingerbread men, cranberry scones, and champagne.
One year, I had a Christmas-themed afternoon tea at The Savoy, and it felt like stepping back in time to an elegant holiday celebration.
Christmas Shows and Events
London’s theatre scene is world-famous, and at Christmas, it gets extra festive.
Christmas Carol at the Old Vic – A London tradition, beautifully staged every year.
Pantomimes – Fun, family-friendly shows filled with comedy, singing, and audience participation.
West End Musicals – Classics like The Lion King or Frozen are always popular for a festive night out.
Carol Services – St. Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey host beautiful carol services. Even if you’re not religious, the music is magical.
